Kuutar CL is a new turnip rape variety for Clearfield® cultivation (CL). In BASF’s Clearfield® cultivation system, broad‑leaved weeds can also be controlled without harming the crop. Herbicide resistance has been introduced into turnip rape traditionally through crossing. Kuutar CL is early even for turnip rape and is suitable for cultivation across the entire turnip rape growing area, developed using Boreal’s Nordic expertise in breeding for northern conditions.
Kuutar CL is an early turnip rape, maturing a couple of days earlier than, for example, Synthia. It is suitable for cultivation throughout the turnip rape production area in zones I–IV in Finland.
Kuutar CL yields 11% more than Aurea CL turnip rape. However, CL turnip rape yields do not reach the level of conventional turnip rapes. Its advantage lies specifically in fields with problematic weed pressure. Kuutar’s higher yield potential compared with Aurea is due to its status as a synthetic hybrid variety, like Boreal’s other modern varieties.
Kuutar CL is suitable for food use and animal protein feed. Kuutar has slightly higher oil content than Aurea. Its earliness increases stability, as indicated by low chlorophyll content.
Kuutar CL is a short‑stature turnip rape. Its stem strength is similar to Aurea’s and not as high as Synthia’s.
Correct crop rotation is extremely important for preventing the most common oilseed diseases: Sclerotinia stem rot and clubroot. In northern conditions, a 4–5 year break from oilseed crops on the same field is recommended. To avoid Sclerotinia, breaks should also be kept from other host crops such as: caraway, pea, faba bean, potato and clovers. A fungicide spray against Sclerotinia is recommended if:
Kuutar CL is recommended for zones I, II, III and Iv in Finland where weeds are a problem. Turnip rape is not recommended on the most drought‑prone fields. On humus‑rich and moist soils, emergence is more uniform. The recommended sowing rate is 4 kg/ha. Oilseeds should be sown with treated seed. Turnip rape should be sown 1 cm deep.
Broad‑leaved weeds can be difficult to control in turnip rape without injuring the crop. BASF’s Clearfield® system addresses this need. Kuutar CL is designed for use with the Clearfield® system, where weeds can be controlled up to the 8‑leaf stage using BASF’s Clentiga herbicide. Clentiga must not be used on anything other than Clearfield varieties.
Herbicide tolerance is based on a single gene introduced through traditional crossing. Conventional turnip rapes do not tolerate these herbicides. Please study the Clearfield® method carefully before purchasing Kuutar CL. The Clearfield method must not be used on the same field more often than once every three years. Recommended crops after CL turnip rape include: winter and spring wheat, barley, rye and peas.
