Plant Breeding

At Boreal, plant breeding is more than work — it is a passion. We develop high yielding and reliable varieties of barley, oats, wheat, rye, forage grasses, oilseed crops, pea and faba bean — all designed to withstand Finland’s demanding growing conditions, with Nordic expertise in breeding for northern conditions.

The effectiveness of our breeding programmes is based on long‑term experience, top‑level expertise and the use of modern technologies. Our goal is to develop varieties that support Finnish agriculture — today and in the future.

For the benefit of Finnish farmers

We want to make the everyday life of farmers better. We work continuously to ensure that Finnish crop production is profitable, sustainable and competitive. In our breeding work, we take the changing climate into account and develop climate resilient varieties that help farmers adapt to future challenges.

A comprehensive selection of crops for Finnish conditions

Boreal’s breeding programmes include more than ten crop species and nearly 20 different variety types. This ensures that farmers across Finland have access to diverse crop rotations with varieties developed and tested in Finland.

A diverse crop rotation:

  • Reduces production risks
  • Balances peak workloads
  • Improves soil structure and fertility
  • Reduces the risk of plant diseases

Variety development for productive cultivation

Through long‑term plant breeding, we have raised yield potential to a new level. We have developed varieties that, in addition to high yield and quality, offer:

  • improved disease resistance
  • lodging resistance
  • drought tolerance

Our goal is clear: farmers achieve higher yields and better quality — with lower costs. Better yield means better profitability. More resilient varieties reduce the need for plant protection products and other inputs — saving money for farmers and benefiting the environment.

Field trial operations

Domestically developed varieties undergo multi‑year testing before entering official variety trials. Every year, Boreal sows around 30,000 test plots across Finland. Trial sites range from Southwest Finland to northern Ostrobothnia. This ensures that only the best varieties — suited to domestic conditions — reach the market.

Supporting farmers through change

Boreal supports domestic food production in all conditions and in a changing climate. We provide Finnish expertise and reliable, research‑based information to support decision making and cultivation.
