Boreal continues over a century of Finnish plant breeding tradition. Already in the early 1900s it was understood how important it is to develop varieties capable of thriving in northern growing conditions. In 1994, Finnish expertise, breeding materials and resources were combined — and Boreal was founded to secure the future of domestic food production.

Breeding work is carried out in Jokioinen, and a comprehensive testing network ensures that varieties meet the standards of the BOR label: reliable to cultivate, high quality and responsibly produced.

All Boreal varieties are protected. Seed companies pay royalties for variety representation, and farm‑saved seed (TOS) also generates fees. These funds finance the continuity of domestic plant breeding and the development of even better varieties for Finnish fields.
