Sampo is an early, high yielding faba bean variety suited for a wide cultivation area. Its small seeds make handling easier — sowing, combining and drying are simpler, and germination potential is secured. Developed with Boreal’s Nordic expertise in breeding for northern conditions.
In Finnish official trials, Sampo has been 6 days earlier than Kontu.
Sampo is a high yielding and very early. Its yield level is similar to Kontu despite being much earlier.
Faba bean is used for livestock feed. It is most suitable for pig feed, and food use is also increasing.
Sampo is slightly shorter than Kontu and has shown less lodging.
Resistance to grey mould and chocolate spot is comparable to Kontu — fairly good.
Sampo is well suited for cultivation across the entire faba bean growing region, zones I–III. Its yield performance has been good in all test zones and soil types. Not recommended for very drought prone soils. On heavy clay and silt soils, 30–40 kg/ha starter nitrogen may be applied. No other nitrogen is needed due to nitrogen fixation. Potassium and phosphorus requirements are similar to feed cereals.
