Sylvester ^BOR

Sylvester is a late six‑row feed and starch barley for Finnish zones I–IV. Its growing time is slightly longer than Kaarle and Toria.

In official variety trials, Sylvester’s yield has been 6% higher than Kaarle, the control variety. Its good adaptability is demonstrated by strong performance across:

• all Finnish cultivation zones
• different years
• different soil types

Sylvester also tolerates acidity very well.

Sylvester is suitable for starch and feed barley. Its quality characteristics:

• good grain size
• average TGW
• high percentage of larger kernels
• high starch content
• hectoliter weight at the same level as Kaarle

As typical for high‑yield barley, protein content has been low in official trials.

Sylvester has a medium‑length but very strong straw, providing stability.

Sylvester has very good overall disease resistance. Highlights:

• exceptionally good resistance to barley Bipolaris leaf blotch
• good resistance to both forms of net blotch
• moderate resistance to powdery mildew
• good resistance to Rhynchosporium scald
• overall low levels of leaf blotch and physiological leaf spots compared with other late maturing varieties
