A high‑yielding and large‑grained feed and starch barley with a strong stem and excellent disease resistance — well adapted to northern conditions.
Alvari is a medium‑late six‑row barley.
Alvari is among the highest‑yielding six‑row barleys on the market, even though it matures 2–3 days earlier than many other medium‑late competitors. Its yield is also competitive with many two‑row varieties. Grain characteristics:
Alvari is excellent for feed barley and also a potential starch barley.
Alvari has a very strong stem and is somewhat taller than other six‑row varieties.
Alvari has good resistance to barley leaf blotch diseases. Resistance to Rhynchosporium (leaf scald) is very good, and resistance to the net type of net blotch is good. It does not have specific resistance to powdery mildew. Combined leaf blotch + physiological leaf spot levels have been among the lowest of all six‑row varieties.
Alvari has performed very well in Finnish official trials across years and soil types and tolerates soil acidity. Recommended zones: I, II, III and IVe in Finland. Alvari is also a reliable option for southern barley regions, where its shorter growth duration enables timely harvesting, for example before sowing winter wheat.
