Jukka raises the yield bar for early oats

The story of the Jukka oat is its extremely high yield potential and strong straw.

The new variety Jukka^BOR is an exceptionally lodging‑resistant and high‑yielding oat suited especially to fertile soils. Boreal’s oat breeder Hanna Haikka highlights that soil type matters greatly when planning to grow Jukka. It shines particularly on:

• coarse mineral soils
• organic soils

On clay soils, the benefit over other varieties is not as pronounced.

“Jukka has tremendous yield potential when placed on the right soil. It should not be grown on the driest soils or heavy clays,” Haikka says.

Yield advantage through slightly longer growth period

Jukka belongs to the later‑maturing group of early oats and requires about 34 growing-degree days more than Niklas, Finland’s most widely grown oat.

Yet its performance is exceptional:

• Jukka yields 10% more than Niklas

• Maturity difference:

~2 days in southern Finland
~5 days in Northern Ostrobothnia

“The risk that Jukka would not mature in time is very small, even in northern zones,” Haikka assures.

Growth regulator use — moderate only. Haikka recommends only moderate growth regulator application, since:

• Overuse risks trapping the panicle in the boot
• Jukka’s straw is very strong
• Straw length is not particularly long

“Jukka responds to growth regulators better than average. In Boreal’s Isonkyrö trials, one regulator application shortened the straw by about ten centimeters,” Haikka explains.

Designed as a milling oat. Jukka is bred as a milling oat.

It has:

• higher‑than‑average beta glucan and oil content → also suitable for feed
• one of the highest thousand‑kernel weights among early oats
• better grain size distribution than Niklas

Jukka has passed Boreal’s multi‑year Fusarium resistance tests, ensuring that Fusarium‑susceptible material does not proceed to market.
