Vire BOR

Vire is a high yielding, strong stemmed, reliable faba bean variety suitable for food use and feed for all livestock. Low vicine and convicine content. Developed with Boreal’s Nordic expertise in breeding for northern conditions.

Vire is an early faba bean variety bred for northern growing conditions.

Vire is very high yielding. On average, it yields about 20% more than Kontu. Vire’s seed size is similar to Kontu. Although Vire has a slightly lower protein content than Kontu, its high yield results in a significantly higher protein yield.

Vire is the first Nordic faba bean variety with a low vicine–convicine content. This allows its use in human food products and in feed for egg laying hens and sows, in addition to other livestock.

Vire has a strong stem. Significant lodging is rare.

Vire has relatively good disease resistance. Its resistance to chocolate spot has been slightly better than Kontu.

Vire is suitable for all mineral soils, but not recommended for very drought prone soils. Recommended for Finnish cultivation zones I–IIIe.
