Messi is a winter rapeseed variety that challenges other market varieties with its high yield and good winter hardiness, developed using Boreal’s Nordic expertisefor northern conditions.
Messi is moderately late, but earlier than its predecessor Thure.
Messi has high yield potential. In Boreal’s trials, it has exceeded Thure’s yield at all test sites.
Suitable for vegetable oil industry use.
Messi is a semi dwarf variety. Although taller than other breeders’ semi dwarf lines, its growing point remains close to the soil surface in autumn, which supports winter survival.
Boreal trials have confirmed that Messi has sufficient winter hardiness. Winter rapeseed, however, requires good autumn management (including growth regulators), timely sowing and a favorable winter even in southern Finland.
Winter rapeseed performs well in southern Finland. Field selection should follow the same principles as for winter cereals. Winter rapeseed is sown early, which affects preceding crop choices. Best suited to mineral soils. Recommended sowing density: 40–75 plants/m². Seeds are sold in 1 unit bags (1 unit = 1.5 million viable seeds). At 50 plants/m², one bag covers 3 hectares. Recommended sowing time: early August. Effective heat sum after sowing should be 450–500 °C before winter to ensure adequate development:
before winter.
