BOR Helga

BOR Helga is a very early variety, similar in earliness to Helmi wheat in Finnish official variety trials.

BOR Helga is exceptionally high‑yielding for such an early variety. In Finnish official trials, it has yielded 4% higher than Helmi on average.

BOR Helga has shown very stable yields across a wide range of conditions.
It has even exceeded the main milling wheat control variety Demonstrant:

• across Finnish cultivation zones
• on coarse mineral soils and clay soils

In low‑ and medium‑yield trial environments, BOR Helga has outperformed Helmi.

BOR Helga is an excellent milling wheat. Key quality features:

• moderately high protein content
• excellent gluten quality and quantity
• gluten is highly elastic and extensible, producing bread with a round, well‑formed structure

As with other early varieties, falling number stability requires attention. Harvest should be done promptly once maturity is reached.

BOR Helga has a relatively long straw but very strong lodging resistance.

• 0% lodging in Finnish official trials — the best performance among tested varieties.

Disease resistance is average for early wheat varieties.

• Septoria leaf blotch and brown rust should be monitored from the tillering stage.
• Split fungicide applications may be necessary starting at weed‑control timing.

BOR Helga carries the orange wheat blossom midge resistance gene, providing targeted protection against larval feeding.

BOR Helga is suitable for the entire spring wheat production area, including the northernmost regions. In zones I and II in Finland, its earliness helps:

• distribute workload peaks
• reduce production risks during extreme weather events

Recommended Finnish cultivation zones: I–IV.
