A very high‑yielding two‑row variety for feed and starch barley production. Strong disease resistance and good adaptability across soil types. Its characteristics also make it a promising option for organic farming under northern conditions.
Wish is a two‑row barley tested in Finland’s official variety trials in 2019–2021. Growing time corresponds to approximately 1000 degree days, making it a fairly late variety suitable for zones I–III in Finland.
Wish has shown excellent yield potential not only in Finland but also in Denmark, where it ranked among the top‑yielding varieties for four consecutive years.
Wish has large kernels and a high grain uniformity rate. Its hectoliter weight and protein percentage have been slightly below average, but its high yield level results in an above‑average protein yield. Wish is an excellent choice for feed and starch barley, and due to its large biomass and yield capacity, also well suited for whole‑crop silage.
Wish produces abundant tillers and has long straw. It is prone to lodging, so growth regulator use is recommended, particularly in nutrient‑rich soils.
Wish has strong disease resistance. In official trials it has shown significantly higher resistance than RGT Planet to both types of net blotch. Rhynchosporium (leaf scald) resistance is excellent, with no observed infections in trials. Wish also carries the mlo gene, making it fully resistant to powdery mildew.
Wish performs best on clay and mineral soils. Because it is prone to lodging, a growth regulator is recommended in favorable conditions. Wish’s characteristics — strong early growth, rapid canopy closure, high biomass and good disease resistance — also support its suitability for organic cultivation.
