Nella ^BOR

Nella is an early oat variety. Recommended for zones I, II, III and IV in Finland.

Nella ranks among the highest‑yielding early oat varieties. It performs well across all soil types and has shown particularly strong results on clay and mineral soils.

Nella’s grain quality meets milling‑industry requirements exceptionally well:

• good grain size and favorable size distribution
• thin hull with excellent dehulling ability
• white grain

Suitable for:

• milling oats
• export oats
• feed oats

Nella’s stem is not as strong as other BOR early oat varieties. However:

• its tillering capacity makes it the most drought‑tolerant early variety,
• but as a trade‑off, growth regulator is recommended in dense stands.

Nella has some of the best resistance to oat leaf blotch among early varieties.

Practical experience indicates:

• higher DON risk than other early varieties

Management recommendations:

• seed treatment essential
• fungicide applications needed when oats follow oats
• good cultivation practices reduce DON risk

• drought limits yield & grain size → field choice matters

Good preceding crops:

• oil crops
• legumes
• winter cereals

Agronomy:

• sow into cold soil
• sowing density 400–550 viable seeds/m²
• nitrogen ensures full yield potential
• split fertilisation can optimise responses to seasonal conditions
• ensure sufficient manganese
