Annual Report and Sustainability Report

Global food consumption is constantly growing, yet climate change is creating challenges for cultivation and food security. How food is produced has significant effects on society, the environment and human well‑being.

As climate conditions deteriorate in many areas south of Finland, arable land is being lost from production. The need for more productive crop varieties is increasing as we aim to meet rising food demand with less cultivated area and faster‑changing conditions. We see plant breeding as part of the solution.

Our core mission at Boreal is to enable Finnish food production by developing crop species and varieties suited to our growing conditions and the needs of the processing industry. Through plant breeding, we improve the prerequisites of agriculture and strengthen the profitability of the Finnish food sector.

Responsibility is reflected in all stages of our work — from the first steps of breeding to the varieties that reach customers and, through them, the end user: the consumer of Finnish food. Customer focus, staff well‑being and environmental values aligned with sustainable development are key factors in supporting Finnish food production.

Our annual report and sustainability report present the key achievements of our operations and the responsibility embedded in our work from societal, environmental, personnel and economic perspectives.
