Tuomas ^BOR

Tuomas is a medium‑late six‑row barley. It is clearly earlier in growing time than Kaarle and also slightly earlier than Alvari. Tuomas is suitable for cultivation in Finnish zones I–IV.

Tuomas high yield potential and performs well in different Finnish cultivation zones and soil types. It also tolerates soil acidity extremely well. In the summary results of the Finnish official variety trials from 2014–2021, Tuomas was the highest‑yielding six‑row barley in the trials.

Tuomas is a very high‑quality variety. Its hectoliter weight is clearly better than that of Kaarle, and its thousand grain weight is high for a six‑row barley. Tuomas has a good starch content, at the same level as Kaarle. Tuomas is well suited for both feed and starch barley production.

The straw of Tuomas is slightly longer compared with Kaarle and very strong. Tuomas has not lodged at all in breeder trials or Finnish official variety trials.

Tuomas has very good overall disease resistance. Its resistance to net blotch and barley Bipolaris leaf blotch are average, and its resistance Rhynchosporium scald is at the level of Kaarle. In addition, Tuomas has moderate resistance to powdery mildew.

Tuomas performs best on organic-rich soils but also produces good yields on clay and coarse mineral soils. It is good to monitor the occurrence of leaf diseases if weather conditions favor disease or barley has been the previous crop. Fungicide control should be applied when necessary. Seed treatment and as diverse crop rotation as possible keep disease risk low. A sowing density of 450–500 viable seeds/m² on humus soils and 500 viable seeds/m² on mineral and clay soils is recommended.
