A malting barley with strong disease resistance, particularly against net blotch. A vigorous variety that performs well both in favorable and stress conditions. Its high starch content increases its versatility.
Brienne is a fairly late two‑row barley. In official variety trials, it has been slightly later than RGT Planet. Brienne is suitable for cultivation in zones I–III in Finland.
Brienne is a stable top‑yield producer and performs well across varying conditions. It has been among the highest‑yielding varieties in both dry trials and high‑yield trials. Brienne is Finland’s highest‑yielding malting barley — +9% higher yielding than the check variety RGT Planet.
Thanks to its high yield, reliability and good grain quality, Brienne is a genuine multipurpose barley for feed, starch and malt. Brienne was approved as a malting barley in Finland in 2025. Hectoliter weight is on the higher side. Grain size is average within two‑row varieties. Protein content and grain uniformity are typical of malting barley.
Brienne has good straw strength. Straw length is medium.
Brienne has good all‑round disease resistance. In official trials, it has shown significantly higher resistance than RGT Planet to both net and spot forms of net blotch. Rhynchosporium (leaf scald) resistance matches that of Trekker. The total amount of leaf spot diseases has been lower in Brienne than in either check variety. Brienne is not mlo for powdery mildew, so mildew may occur under high pressure.
Brienne performs best on clay and mineral soils. A growth regulator is recommended when:
