A remarkably high‑yielding two‑row barley for its growing time, combining malting‑type grain quality with complete mildew resistance. Maire has proven to perform excellently even under dry conditions.
Maire is a fairly early two‑row barley suitable for zones I–IVe in Finland. Official trials show its growing time corresponds to 945 degree days, only about 20 degree days more than many later six‑row varieties.
Considering its earliness, Maire’s yield is exceptionally strong. It equals or surpasses later‑maturing competitor varieties.
Maire has excellent grain quality enabling flexible use. Grain is large, with a high starch content. Hectoliter weight is high, while protein percentage and larger kernel share are average. Maire is well suited for feed and starch barley, and it is also a promising malting candidate.
Maire has relatively short straw. It thrives better than many other barleys in dry conditions because it tillers strongly even under stress. Straw strength is comparable to Trekker. Under vigorous growth conditions, the use of a growth regulator is recommended.
Maire has strong overall resistance with no major weaknesses to leaf spot diseases. Net blotch levels are significantly lower than in check variety RGT Planet. Maire is mlo, and therefore fully resistant to powdery mildew.
Maire performs best on clay and mineral soils. When grown on more fertile soils, growth regulator use is advised, especially under tiller‑favoring conditions. Maire is not recommended for acidic soils.
