Perttu is an early oat variety.

• Growing degree days requirement: ~955°C, 22°C more than Niklas (the control variety)
• suitable for all oat‑growing regions

Perttu ranks among the top‑yielding early oat varieties. Recommended for:

• zones II, III and IV in Finland

Perttu is not recommended for drought‑prone soils.

Perttu’s grain quality is among early oats.

Key traits:

• high thousand kernel weight
• proportion of <2 mm kernels is good
• in dry seasons, produces more small kernels than Niklas or Luukas
• good hectoliter weight
• higher‑than‑average fat and β‑glucan content

These traits increase nutritional value as feed oats.

Perttu is:

• thin‑hulled
• excellent in dehulling performance (Boreal hullability tests)
• white‑hulled

Suitable for:

• milling oats
• export oats
• feed oats

Perttu has a strong stem and is relatively short‑stemmed.

Perttu has excellent disease resistance among early oats. Highlights:

• DON toxin risk low (Boreal Fusarium tests and Luke Ruukki 2025 test)
• seed treatment and disease control recommended when oats are grown in monoculture

Key considerations for early oats:

• drought reduces yield & grain size
• choose fields accordingly

Best preceding crops:

• oil crops
• legumes
• winter cereals

Agronomy:

• sow into cold soil
• sowing rate 400–550 viable seeds/m²
• adequate nitrogen essential
• split fertilisation valuable in adjusting to conditions
• ensure manganese fertilisation
